Resizing Images
Feb 10th, 2010, 12:28pm

Following on to Brendans talk on file types and resizing images for the web, I thought that you might like to see an example of what can be done.

This image was my entry in The Assignment Challenge "From Ground Level". It is taken in the Fens near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire.

(1) Original image
(2) Image Size Box on original image
(3) Cropped and resized image
(4) Image size Box for the cropped image

Note that the file was resized with a photoshop action called the "TLR Resizer" after being cropped which brings your file size back up after you crop an image without doing anything nasty to it.

By unticking the constrain image box, the shape was changed to 16:10 also.

The original image was 4:3

This made the mushrooms seem taller than they actually were.

Hi Eamonn.

Do you not have Bicubic Sharper, or Smart  in Photo Shop ? The Bicubic you have set there is for up-scaling images, not reducing them.

That's why there's blocks on all diagonal lines of the grass.

James

Sorry, just saw that in your post.
Is this action script doing something funky then to cause these blocky lines ?

I think it's the print screen image you are seeing this on.

It looks fine on my screen with the high res images and it was fine on the projector on Monday night.

2 things, 1) I love your original image with the "Mudhut" backdrop in the shape of a mushroom, I really like that image, well done.
& 2) Should we start a thread of all entries for last Monday with details of "from ground level" or above, would be an interesting post, nice shootin' Eamonn & very informative post.

Ahh... as in a screen capture from within Photo Shop ?

That would make perfect sense then since that's a “Feature” of photo shop. You don't have to put up with that though. There is an option on photo shop's main settings that gets it to display the images properly regardless of what res the are.

In my opinion Adobe should never had turned this on by default as it's only something for people who edit massive images with large numbers of layers. It's function is to reduce the amount of RAM the image takes when it's opened.

Thanks Terry.

I was trying to get the whole lot sharp but just could not get sufficent depth of field.

I have learned since that I should have taken two photos with different focus points.

It was the mushroom shape of the hut that attracted me in the first place.
