Sorting files into the time they were taken.
Jun 3rd, 2012 at 2:07pm

Hi all.

If your like me and you have lots of photo's taken over years, maybe even taken with different cameras and you would like to have them all organised by the time and date they were taken.

If you put all your photo's in a single folder, a program called File Renamer Basic (its free) can read the EXIF information in them, and rename the actual files for you so that they are all in order regardless of what camera you used.

For example, I just renamed all my files to...

000000001.JPG
000000002.JPG
000000003.JPG
000000004.JPG
000000005.JPG
000000006.JPG

And so on.......

Takes about 30 seconds to setup, and it will rename a few thousand files in seconds.

Hi James
This looks very useful.
Can you advise if it will hold the Title already given to the files - eg - if I call my list of shots from today - "Garden-2012" - will it then just add the date to the Title - or will it override my title by the date taken.
Thanks
John

This will re-name all your files with the sequence you choose. So if you have a folder of files with different names i.e Church.jpg/tramore.jpg/City.jpg  it will just re-name all those files to whatever you set the program up..So the way james set his up those three files will now become 00000001.jpg/00000002.jpg/00000003.jpg.. so then its up to you to find the church.tramore/city pics you saved.

Play around with it, put 10 photos that you are going to delete and see if you can name them in the set up , that way you can set  the program up for each folder then rename. After this when you add more files to that folder, you just apply the program and it will name "all" the files again, as you can see it only takes seconds to do the whole folder. So if you shoot the saltees, you can add all your photos each year to the one folder and just rename them saltee.jpg
